Netezza/Cloud Pak for Data
End of Service Information

Man looking over edge of cliff illustrating end of service

IBM recently announced the end of support for its “Hammerhead” platform, also known as the Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.8 thru 1.0.8x

The Hammerhead platform came into existence in 2022 to satisfy the ongoing demand for Netezza as a standalone appliance. When the Netezza database was relaunched in 2020, hosted on the Cloud Pak for Data platform, many businesses were disadvantaged because they only needed to run NPS workloads, with no requirement for the OpenShift Container Platform (OCP), which ran in the background and competed for CPU resources. The solution was to disable all features that depended on OpenShift and offer CP4DS 1.0.7.8 as an upgrade.

CP4DS 1.0.7.8 has had a short lifecycle. An issue has been that it runs on RHEL 7 which has already reached EOS, but Hammerhead customers have been give a grace period to upgrade with 2 service packs planned. When 1.0.9.0 with RHEL 8.x is released, it will be a fully supported release for Netezza, covered by Extended Update Support (EUS) from Red Hat. The final EOS date for Hammerhead is therefore still TBD.

  • The release dates might be subject to change.
  • Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.8.3 and 1.0.8.4 are last major releases for RHEL 7. The end of support has been extended to give sufficient time for RHEL upgrade.
  • Direct upgrades from the 1.0.4.x and 1.0.5.x releases to 1.0.7.0 are supported.
  • IBM expects customers to upgrade to the 1.0.7.x stream in order to leverage the rich features, which are part of the 1.0.7.x release stream.

Final Fix and End of Support for Cloud Pak for Data 2.x has not yet been announced, see table below.
